Partner Schools Aid Houston Scholars After Hurricane

Winter 2018 | Houston

In the days following Hurricane Harvey, Posse Houston’s college partners showed strong support for Scholars in a time of need.

Posse Houston’s newest partner, Wellesley College, had intended to welcome their first Posse to campus the week of the hurricane. When the storm caused travel delays, Scholars were unable to attend the three-day orientation, which had included a meeting with the dean, enrollment in classes and a special shopping trip for winter coats.

Fortunately, Wellesley created a condensed orientation once Scholars arrived, guaranteeing that every student was ready to start classes the following Tuesday.

Houston partners Colby College and Carleton College also sprang to action, organizing teams charged with reaching out to Posse Scholars and all students from the storm-affected area. Each college took measures to confirm the safety of Scholars, help with travel changes, and assess whether additional accommodations were necessary to ensure a smooth adjustment to school.

"We are so appreciative of the care and support shown to Houston Scholars by our partner institutions as they transitioned onto campus," says Posse Houston Director Kamari Brewer.
