Becton Dickinson Manager Guides Posse Scholars at Academic Immersion Day

Fall 2025 | Houston

On June 5, Posse Houston hosted its annual Academic Immersion Day (AID) at the University of Houston, giving Scholars an invaluable opportunity to experience the rigor and rhythm of college life before setting foot on their campuses. Designed as a ‘day-in-the-life’ of a college student, AID helps Scholars build confidence by strengthening their academic skills and preparing them for the challenges and opportunities they will soon encounter.

A central highlight of this year’s program was the keynote session led by Posse Houston Leadership Council member Ashley Hicks, Becton Dickinson’s manager of DEI and engagement, US region, Canada & corporate marketing. By engaging directly with the Scholars, Ashley shared her own journey and offered guidance on personal branding, challenging students to consider how their values, identities, and voices shape the opportunities they pursue.

Building a personal brand isn’t about creating a facade, it’s about leaning into authenticity and clarity.

“I wanted to share that building a personal brand isn’t about creating a facade, it’s about leaning into authenticity and clarity so others can see the impact you’re meant to make. My hope is that they walked away remembering that their voice, story, and presence are powerful tools, and that owning those with confidence will open doors throughout their academic and professional careers,” says Ashley.

Throughout the day, Scholars participated in workshops and activities that introduced them to the expectations of college-level learning. They practiced strategies for notetaking, active listening, and engaging in classroom discussions. They also worked collaboratively on problem-solving exercises that mirrored the group work and critical thinking often required in college courses. These sessions not only provided practical tools for success but also emphasized the importance of preparation, curiosity, and resilience in navigating academic challenges.

For the Scholars, Academic Immersion Day was more than just preparation; it was a chance to learn from a leader within their own Posse Houston network. Ashley’s presence underscored the connection between the Leadership Council and the Scholars, showing how Houston’s community of supporters is directly invested in their success.

As they look ahead to starting college this fall, Scholars will carry with them the confidence gained from Academic Immersion Day. They leave with stronger academic tools, a clearer sense of how to bring their authentic selves into new environments, and the encouragement of knowing that Posse Houston’s community is standing behind them every step of the way.
