Texas A&M Scholar Pursues Career in Physical Therapy

Spring 2021 | Atlanta

This spring, Posse Scholar Garrett Montague will complete an undergraduate degree in kinesiology at Texas A&M University (TAMU). He will continue his studies in a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program at Georgia State University.

Garrett became interested in a career in physical therapy while still in high school, seeing it as a way to serve others in need.

“Experience and exposure to patients as a physical therapy technician has heightened my passion for serving in this profession,” Garrett says. “I use a patient-centered approach while promoting health equity, which reinforces the importance of engaging in meaningful interaction while achieving a common goal [with the client]. When I consider my interpersonal skills, interest in entrepreneurship, and fascination with the healthcare model [in the United States], physical therapy is the perfect career.”

“I use a patient-centered approach while promoting health equity.”

Garrett credits Posse with broadening his ability to work closely with people from all walks of life, a valuable asset in physical therapy.

“I see physical therapy as an avenue to lead as an active agent of change in the lives of others from a health standpoint and using cultural awareness to forge deeper connections with patients and other health professionals,” Garrett emphasizes, speaking to his motivations for engaging in this important work.

Due to his stellar academics and passionate leadership, Garrett was admitted into three graduate programs for DPT. He looks forward to beginning his practice upon completion of his advanced degree at Georgia State.
