Posse Houston Celebrates 10,000 Scholars, Raises $325K to Support Program

Winter 2022 | Houston

This past October, the Posse Houston community came together to honor the year’s program milestones, including the selection of the 10,000th Posse Scholar. The event, entitled “Celebrating the NEXT 10,000,” welcomed over 200 guests, including many Posse Houston alumni. The evening raised $325,000 for Posse Houston, making it the most successful fundraising event for the site since it was established in 2012.

“All 10,000 Posse Scholars now attend or have attended some of the most competitive colleges and universities in the country,” says Posse Houston Director Zakiya Thomas. “I am proud to say that over 600 of those Scholars are from Houston and roughly 230 of our alumni are now in the workforce.”

The event honored former Posse Houston Advisory Board Chair Dan Pickering, an instrumental figure in the local program.

The NEXT 10,000 honored former Posse Houston Advisory Board Chair Dan Pickering, an instrumental figure in the local program’s establishment and sustainability. Thanks to Dan’s support and leadership, Posse Houston has become one of the fastest-growing Posse sites in the nation.

Dan’s impact in the Posse community was evident throughout the event, including in speeches made by Posse Houston alumni.

Other notable attendees included Posse President and Founder Deborah Bial and Apache Corporation Executive Vice President of Development Dave Pursell. Guests also heard from representatives from the office of Mayor Sylvester Turner, including Houston’s First Daughter, Ashley Turner.
