Notre Dame Posse Alum Earns Fulbright Award

Winter 2020 | New Orleans

Posse Scholar Sydney Porter graduated from the University of Notre Dame this past May and is a recipient of the Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Award. Assuming a lift in COVID-19 travel restrictions, she will travel to Korea next year to teach English while taking full advantage of the immersive cultural experience.

“The time I spent at Notre Dame made me realize that I can achieve so much if I truly work for it.”

Sydney double-majored in political science and television with a minor in Korean at Notre Dame. She plans to integrate her passions for pop culture, politics, and television into her Fulbright work. She hopes to make her English lessons as fun and dynamic as possible.

“The time I spent at Notre Dame broadened my horizons and made me realize that I can achieve so much if I truly work for it,” Sydney says. “I started my Fulbright application while I was in South Korea studying abroad, and now earning the opportunity to return to Korea with Fulbright is such a blessing. I am truly grateful for this opportunity.”

While at Notre Dame, Sydney participated in the Martial Arts Institute and was the president of the Science Fiction and Fantasy clubs. A graduate of John Ehret High School in New Orleans, she was also a political science research assistant and served as a theater teaching assistant.

After completing her year with Fulbright, Sydney plans to return to the United States and apply to graduate school for foreign service or Asian studies. She aspires to one day serve as a public diplomacy officer.
