Carleton Scholar Sets Sights on Ph.D. with Summer Fellowships

Spring 2017 | Houston

Congratulations are in order for Jamonte Strawder, who was awarded the McNair Fellowship in December and a Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship in March.

These highly competitive fellowships aim to increase faculty diversity in higher education by preparing Ph.D.-track students for professorial careers through research and other scholarly activities.

Jamonte, a junior at Carleton College majoring in sociology, will focus his studies on intergenerational trauma during the Civil Rights Movement and the impact of police brutality on young black people over the past decade.

“I realized the dire necessity for millennial intellectuals to document contemporary history,” says Jamonte. “With the McNair and Mellon Mays Fellowships, I have the unique opportunity to create and explore literature that addresses the issues that plague ethnic minorities and marginalized groups in general.”
