BU Scholar Studies Political Science, Founds Student Organization

Spring 2021 | Bay Area

Ronunique Clark, a senior political science major at Boston University (BU), is the founder and co-president of the student natural hair club BU Naturally. The group’s mission is to educate, uplift and inspire BU’s campus community to love their natural hair.

With a slogan of “Natural and Prospering Shine,” BU Naturally aims to promote diversity, inclusivity and love of all natural hair types on campus and in the broader Boston community.

“I wanted a place people can attend regardless of race, economic status, and anything else that makes you check a box beforehand,” says Ronunique of her motivation to launch the group as a deliberately inclusive space. “I felt there was no better way to get people connected other than through their hair.”

“I wanted a place people can attend regardless of race, economic status, and anything else that makes you check a box beforehand.”

Since founding the organization, Ronunique and members of BU Naturally have led community events like Hair Care 101, Curl Chats, and a recent Gift for the Curls unboxing event. Last year, the group was proud to deepen their commitment to promoting and supporting black-owned hair care brands and businesses.

“New people come [into the group] and let their guard down,” Ronunique says. “They want to share their experiences while learning about others.”

Ronunique notes that her diverse experiences at BU have helped shape her as a leader. With skills built both in the classroom and in her community work, she is excited to eventually return home to work on the West Coast. After her graduation this spring, Ronunique hopes to channel her well-honed leadership into a public sector career in the Bay Area.
