BU Scholar Excels in Bank of America Remote Internship

Winter 2020 | Atlanta

Bank of America, a Posse Career Program partner, has met the challenges of providing meaningful internship experiences during the pandemic head-on. This summer, the global financial institution successfully hosted student interns from across the country remotely. Boston University Posse Scholar Ethan Strauther is just one of the many undergraduates who benefitted from a digital role at the bank.

“I was excited to be working with technology to solve problems, which is what I like about engineering.”

Currently a junior at Boston University (BU), Ethan admits that before the pandemic he probably would not have applied for an internship at Bank of America corporate headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina, due to its distance from Boston. When he heard about an opening for a global technology and operations summer analyst, he also hesitated because it seemed far removed from his undergraduate major in biomedical engineering. However, Bank of America’s pivot to accommodate virtual associates meant the role became within reach—and Ethan found the field more familiar than he originally thought.

“I was excited to be working with technology to solve problems, which is what I like about engineering,” he says. “As an analyst, I worked with big data and data analytics within applications like Excel and Tableau.”

Ethan received guidance from mentors, learned new skills—including how to work effectively in a virtual environment—and met Posse alumni who are now Bank of America associates.

Despite interning remotely, Ethan describes the experience as rewarding and “incredibly engaging.”

"As interns we were treated not as students but as capable employees," Ethan says.
