112 Young Leaders from Chicago Earn Posse Scholarships

Winter 2014 | Chicago

On January 8, 2014, Posse Chicago honored 112 young leaders who will attend college next fall as Posse Scholars. Nearly 500 guests, including family, friends, school counselors, current Posse Scholars and alumni, as well as advisory board and leadership council members, celebrated these students and their accomplishments at the Chase Auditorium during the Awards Ceremony sponsored by Kraft Foods Group.

“Kraft is proud to partner with The Posse Foundation to celebrate the next generation of leaders here in Chicago and beyond,” says advisory board member Gil de las Alas, the vice president of human resources for Kraft.

The new Scholars were selected from more than 2,600 students nominated by 100 percent of Chicago public high schools and 117 community-based organizations within the city. They were awarded $18.5 million in four-year, full-tuition scholarships to 11 top-tier colleges and universities across the country.

“You have proven yourselves through your leadership ability, your dedication to community service and your outstanding academic performance,” said Barbara Byrd-Bennett, the CEO of Chicago Public Schools. “Each of you is sitting at the edge of your seat with the power right at your fingertips. And I’ll ask you that wherever your path takes you and whatever your dreams are, that you’ll help the next generation of Chicago students achieve their dreams as well.”

Since 2000, Posse Chicago’s college and university partners have awarded more than 1,000 leadership scholarships to Posse Scholars.
