Posse Honors Miami-Dade Superintendent Alberto Carvalho

Winter 2014 | Miami

Posse Miami’s fourth annual Power of 10 fundraiser was held in October 2013 at the stunning New World Center to celebrate the accomplishments of Posse Scholars and alumni. The event raised more than $90,000 and honored Alberto M. Carvalho, the superintendent of Miami‐Dade County Public Schools, for his tireless efforts in promoting equity in education and tremendous support of Posse.

“Superintendent Carvalho has been a fervent supporter of Posse Miami,” says Posse Miami Director Nadine Dalrymple. “He was instrumental in bringing Posse to Miami and we thank him for his continued commitment and dedication to our organization.”

Since 2008, Superintendent Carvalho has led the nation’s fourth largest school system and is a nationally recognized expert on school reform and finance. Now widely considered one the nation’s highest performing urban school systems, the Miami-Dade Public Schools have produced thousands of young leaders who have been nominated for the Posse Scholarship.

John Leverston, a Posse Chicago alumnus and graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, concluded the Power of 10 program acknowledging the impact of Posse’s comprehensive support network.

“We were able to achieve what we did because Posse set up a support system that also extended beyond our Posse,” said John who currently works for City Year in Miami. “To paraphrase Sir Isaac Newton, ‘If I can see far, it is because I stand on the shoulders of giants.’ Posse was my giant.”
