Houston Scholar Will Bring Leadership and Debating Skills to Bryn Mawr

Spring 2013 | Houston

Jessica Bernal, a senior at Chinquapin Preparatory School, is among the first Scholars selected from Houston. An academic star and student leader, she will be attending Bryn Mawr College with her Posse in the fall.

“I’m excited to go to Bryn Mawr with my Posse,” says Jessica. “I’m ready to explore new territory and grow as a person.”

Her outgoing nature and thoughtful contributions made Jessica stand out during the Dynamic Assessment Process, Posse’s unique approach to Scholar selection. It came as no surprise when she revealed that her favorite course is speech & debate and that she has won honors in state-wide debate competitions.

A passionate environmentalist, Jessica is a team leader of the Student Conservation Association, an organization dedicated to helping students interested in conservation careers gain critical skills, training and environmental field experience. Jessica travels annually as a volunteer at five state parks where she assists in park clean-ups, construction of out buildings, and removal of non-native plant species.

Recently, Jessica participated in Project Close Up’s high school program in Washington, D.C. The nonpartisan citizenship education organization provides students with opportunities to examine the American political system. During a political workshop, Jessica was selected as a mock presidential candidate by her peers in recognition of her leadership and passion for world issues.
