Wooster Scholar Prepares for Career in Social Justice

Fall 2018 | Atlanta

Mayori (Margie) Sosa is a junior at The College of Wooster studying political science with a minor in Latin American studies. Her rigorous studies combined with her experiences leading campus organizations and studying abroad are laying the groundwork for a career in social justice.

While keeping up with academic demands, Margie also serves as president of the First-Generation Student Organization and co-president of Latinas Unidas. She founded and chartered both organizations at Wooster to support first-generation and Latina students, respectively.

In addition, Margie is an at-large senator in the school’s student government and chair of the outreach and diversity committee. As a student activist on campus, Margie works diligently to advocate for her Latinx peers who are first-generation students or from low-income households.

The summer before her sophomore year, Margie interned for the Atlanta Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs. This past summer, she interned with the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office.

Margie recently received a Kendall-Rives Latin American Research Grant to travel to Peru to study the impact of gender quotas on local legislature.

“From witnessing criminal trials to researching and studying women’s representation in the legislature of Peru, I learned more about myself and the law than I ever would have thought possible,” she says of her recent experiences.

Margie looks forward to a semester as a visiting politics student at Oxford University’s Lady Margaret Hall next year. After graduating from Wooster, she plans on attending law school and, ultimately, hopes to pursue a career that addresses inequalities in the U.S. education and immigration systems.
