Vassar Scholar Serves as Veterans Program Intern, Aims Towards Med School

Fall 2022 | Veterans

This summer, Vassar College senior Bryan Hawkins interned with the Posse Veterans Program. A Veterans Posse Scholar himself, Bryan focused a large part of his intern responsibilities on applicant outreach, crafting Posse program introductions for military installations and community colleges. Bryan also joined Posse staff and new Scholars in person in New York City for this summer’s Posse Veterans Program Pre-Collegiate Training.

“My Posse has played such an important role in my success at Vassar.”

“I recognize what Posse has done for me over the last three years,” says Bryan. “I wanted to give something back to the program and the Scholars.”

Bryan found that he played an important role when the new Posse Veterans Scholars came to New York for their summer training. As a current Scholar, Bryan provided a personal perspective on the program, sharing his experiences with the newest cohorts.

“The new Scholars often have questions about this new chapter in their lives, so Bryan has been a fantastic resource,” says Posse Veterans Director Adam Lessuck. “Having experienced, successful Scholars interact with our new student veterans during training raises their comfort level, building confidence as they get ready to go to campus.”

Bryan says he appreciates the unique advantages that Posse Veterans Program support has offered him and his Scholar peers.

“My Posse has played such an important role in my success at Vassar,” Bryan says. “We really kept together and supported each other even as we went to online classes because of COVID. It made all the difference in my college experience.”

A biology and pre-med major, Bryan is currently studying to take the MCAT and preparing medical school applications, with the long-term goal of a career as an orthopedic surgeon.
