Union Scholar Excels in Performance, Language Arts

Winter 2020 | Boston

Union College Posse Scholar Unglid Paul’s passion for language and the arts shines both in the classroom and in the world beyond. She is pursuing an English major with minors in French and political science, and has emerged as a student leader dedicated to education and creative pursuits at Union.

On campus, Unglid is a featured singer in the Heavenly Voices Choir, which focuses on gospel music, and is an actress in Mountebanks, the nation’s oldest-run student theater group. This past semester she was cast as a lead in the play “I Put the Fear of Mexico in ‘Em” by Matthew Paul Olmos, which examines disparities between United States and Mexican citizens, exploring and challenging identity and social boundaries. Unglid writes and performs poetry with “African Print in Motion,” an organization at Schenectady Community College. Her performance at last year’s “Dance for a Cause” event was singled out and applauded by local Schenectady newspaper The Daily Gazette.

Unglid has also brought her passions back to her hometown of Boston, emerging as a community leader and youth educator. In the summer after her first year, Unglid was chosen to be a Boston WITA (Working in the Arts) Fellow, a program that gave her an opportunity to support young writers while spending time crafting her own poetry. This past summer Unglid returned to community work at Breakthrough Boston, teaching students English writing and reading skills.

“Today, I stand as a Posse Scholar entering her third year at Union College,” Unglid says. “Tomorrow, I hope to stand as an innovative leader in education. Posse has played a big part in making both this reality and this dream possible.”

Next up, she plans to further sharpen her skills as an educator in the Summer Workshop program offered by the Institute for Recruitment of Teachers (IRT). Upon completing her undergraduate degree, Unglid plans to pursue a doctorate in English and a career in academia as an English professor.
