Scholar Uses Internships to Aid NOLA Revitalization
Bard College Scholar Tareian King devoted her spring semester to finding a summer internship that would help her develop valuable professional skills and also provide her with the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution. She succeeded, earning internships with the New Orleans Project and The Trust for Public Land, both dedicated to rebuilding and improving the City of New Orleans.
Tareian chose to work with the New Orleans Project after completing leadership and organizational training through Bard’s Trustee Leader-Scholar Program (TLS). TLS challenges students to create their own hands-on community service plan. The New Orleans Project is revitalizing buildings, schools, and after school programs in an effort to rebuild the Broadmoor neighborhood.
Drawing on her experience as a Posse Scholar, Tareian designed and led morning activities for fifth and sixth graders attending camp at Andrew H. Wilson Elementary School.
“These activities helped the kids get more comfortable with themselves and each other,” says Tareian.
In addition to the New Orleans Project, Tareian worked with Posse Career Program partner The Trust for Public Land, a nonprofit organization dedicated to land conservation. Tareian contributed to the New Orleans site’s efforts of establishing the Lafitte Greenway, a bicycle and pedestrian parkway that will connect several neighborhoods and create recreational activity space for the community.
