Oberlin Scholar Selected for Ashby Business Program, Sets Sights on Career in Motorsports
Martin Gomez, a Posse Houston Scholar at Oberlin College, is embracing opportunities that are expanding his perspective both inside and outside the classroom. This year, Martin was selected for the 2026–27 Ashby Business Scholars Program. In addition, he was named Rookie of the Year by the Oberlin men’s swim team. Both achievements reflect his commitment to learning, perseverance and personal growth.
The Ashby Business Scholars Program is designed to prepare students from a wide range of academic disciplines for careers in business through professional development, experiential learning and connections with alumni and industry leaders. For Martin, joining the next cohort represents an opportunity to explore new possibilities while building skills that will support his future ambitions.
“Being selected as an Ashby Business Scholar was both exciting and affirming,” says Martin. “It recognized the hard work I have put into my academics and campus involvement, and it gave me the opportunity to join a community of students eager to grow professionally.”
Over the next year, Martin will participate in coursework, networking opportunities and alumni engagement designed to introduce students to a variety of business sectors and career pathways. He is particularly eager to learn from professionals and Oberlin graduates working across the country.
“The program will expose me to different areas of business through coursework, networking and alumni connections,” he says. “I hope these experiences will help me discover career paths that interest me while strengthening my professional skills.”
Outside the classroom, Martin has found another source of growth through collegiate athletics. As a member of the Oberlin men’s swim team, he has experienced the demands of balancing academics with the rigorous schedule of a varsity athlete.
His efforts were recognized with the team’s Rookie of the Year Award, an honor that acknowledged the contributions he made during his first season.
“Receiving Rookie of the Year was such a meaningful honor, to be recognized by my coaches and teammates,” says Martin. “It was something I never expected.”
The experience has also reinforced lessons that extend far beyond competition. Through early morning practices, team responsibilities and the daily commitment required to improve, Martin has developed habits that continue to influence his approach to college life.
“Swimming has taught me discipline, resilience, and accountability,” says Martin. “The commitment required to balance athletics and academics has helped me become a more dependable teammate and a stronger student.”
Looking ahead, Martin hopes to combine the knowledge gained through the Ashby Business Scholars Program with the determination he has developed as a student-athlete. He plans to pursue a career in Formula 1, a field known for its fast pace, innovation and competitiveness.
“These experiences have strengthened my work ethic, resilience, and willingness to embrace new opportunities,” says Martin. “I believe the professional skills gained through the Ashby Business Scholars Program and the discipline developed through collegiate athletics will help prepare me to succeed in the world of motorsports.”
