Middlebury Scholar Builds Connections, Explores Career in Finance with Goldman Sachs

Fall 2023 | Chicago

Tyler Reed, a sophomore at Middlebury College, is eager to learn about the finance industry and build his professional network. Earlier this year, Tyler accepted an internship with Goldman Sachs’ Emerging Leaders Series, a unique educational opportunity for Black and Latinx first-year students interested in finance careers.

Planning to major in economics with a minor in sociology, Tyler was excited to learn of his acceptance to the Emerging Leaders Series.

“I want to be a leader in the industry and dedicate myself to uplifting and including people with experiences similar to mine.”

“I knew what I wanted to do as a career; I wanted to jump right into finance,” Tyler says. “The Emerging Leaders Series program satisfies my thirst for knowledge and my ambition,” he says.

As part of the FICC and Equities and Investment Banking division, Tyler had the opportunity to learn from division-specific professionals about their roles. He received an overview of the finance industry in addition to becoming more knowledgable about Goldman Sachs. Later this year, he will participate in technical training and interview skills workshops and receive mentorship from a member of his division.

Tyler says, “I plan to apply my learnings to my campus involvements, such as the Middlebury Diversity in Business and Distinguished Men of Color clubs.”

Tyler hopes to one day take on a leadership position at a financial institution or start his own private equity firm.

“I want to be a leader in the industry and dedicate myself to uplifting and including people with experiences similar to mine.”
