Goldman Sachs Vice Chair Champions Posse
Kurt Simon is a partner and vice chairman at Goldman Sachs and one of four executives at the firm who sit on Posse’s national board. A veteran investment banker described in the Wall Street Journal as a “merger master,” Kurt brings years of leadership experience and network-building expertise to the role. His three years on the board has solidified his understanding of the program’s value, both for students individually and society at large.
Kurt grew up in Boston and attended Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. He recalls feeling lonely at times during his freshman year.
“I knew no one on campus on my first day at Duke,” says Kurt. “There were moments where I could have used more support; I would have benefitted from a Posse.”
Initially intending to pursue a career in sports management, Kurt instead took a job in investment banking after graduating from Duke. He has since spent his entire 35-year career in the financial services industry, building an impressive list of accomplishments along the way.
Posse is effective because of the clarity of its leadership and the strength of the alumni network.
Kurt first learned about Posse over 10 years ago when former Posse Board Chair Brad Singer invited him to attend a Posse Gala in New York City. The Scholar and alumni stories showcased at the annual fundraiser—each demonstrating the program’s unique impact—piqued Kurt’s interest.
“The way the students spoke about their experiences was moving and motivating, and I knew that I wanted to get involved in some capacity.”
Since joining the board in 2021 , Kurt’s dedication to Posse has only grown. In addition to his contributions and service on the board, Kurt meets with Posse Scholars interning at Goldman each summer to learn about their experiences, share insights about the industry, and point them to other valuable professional development opportunities.
“They are asking thoughtful questions and thinking beyond the surface,” says Kurt. “They are remarkable.”
Kurt notes that diversity, strong networks and strong leadership play an important role in any successful business venture.
“Posse is effective because of the clarity of its leadership and the strength of the alumni network,” he says. “It’s not just about sending students to college; it’s about a bigger agenda—investing in the next generation of leaders.”
