Centre College Scholar Joins International Archaeological Expedition in Armenia

Fall 2025 | Boston

This summer, Centre College junior Caleb Tarbush took part in an international archaeological expedition in Armenia, where he helped uncover animal bones and obsidian tools dating back more than 10,000 years. A sociology and anthropology major, Tarbush gained hands-on experience that deepened his academic focus while also connecting him to a global research community.

Working alongside scientists and archaeologists from Iran, Syria, Germany and Armenia, Tarbush conducted fieldwork that included excavation, measurement and artifact identification. He also collaborated with representatives of the Armenian government, contributing to ongoing research in a country known for its rich archaeological heritage and long tradition of international study.

Reflecting on the experience, Tarbush says, “This community was the only thing holding me together in that new and strange place,” describing the sense of belonging and collaboration that developed within his research team.

Tarbush’s participation was made possible in part by the Posse Summer Leadership Award, which provides funding for Scholars to pursue unpaid or minimally paid internships and leadership opportunities. The support helped offset costs of joining the multi-country team, enabling him to focus fully on the expedition.

Back at Centre College, Tarbush plans to continue his studies in anthropology and sociology with a focus on the evolution of communities and cultures. He also credits the Posse program with sustaining his academic journey.

“I can say without a shadow of a doubt that if I didn’t have my Posse, I would not have made it this far.”
