Bucknell Scholar Pusues STEM Career at New England Bio Labs
Yerissel Tavarez, a sophomore Biology major at Bucknell University, is taking bold steps toward a career at the intersection of science, health, and community impact. This summer, Yerissel will join New England BioLabs as an Applications and Product Development Intern, participating in a 10-week program focused on quantifying the relationship between “liquid classes and method parameters.” Her work will include hands-on experience with robotic platforms, including precise “pipetting for high-throughput experiments”—critical skills for cutting-edge research.
Yerissel’s passion for scientific innovation and staying at the forefront of medical research drives her career ambitions. She hopes to blend research, public health, and equity in her future work and is considering pursuing a Master of Public Health after graduation.
At Bucknell, Yerissel has already contributed as an undergraduate researcher and a Medtech Entrepreneurial Fellow, assessing the viability of medical technologies and pitching solutions to industry experts. A highlight included traveling to a major city to interview biotech professionals and present findings to investors.
Reflecting on her growth, Yerissel credits Posse with providing the foundation, mentorship, and leadership skills that empowered her to pursue these opportunities.
“The community, support, and leadership development I’ve received through Posse has given me the confidence to apply for opportunities like this and the resilience to step into new environments with curiosity,” she says.
Her biggest takeaway? “Knowing my worth and never being afraid to take up space.”
