Bryn Mawr Scholar Awarded Mellon Mays Fellowship

Spring 2018 | Houston

Rebeca Salas, a junior Scholar in the third Houston Posse at Bryn Mawr College, was recently awarded the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship for her thesis, "A Mexican Town’s Facebook Page and its Users: The Emotional Impacts of Logging into Facebook."

A Latin American and Latino studies major, Rebeca has made a huge impact on the Bryn Mawr campus as a facilitator of the Race Diversity workshop series and as a founder of Bryn Mawr and Haverford Colleges’ Migrant Rights Coalition. The latter organization grew to a membership of over 140 students in less than two years under her leadership as president.

“I love being part of the Posse program.”

“I love being part of the Posse program,” says Rebeca. “Witnessing my Posse peers accomplish so much on campus strongly motivates me to do the same for the causes I care about.”

Rebeca is also Bryn Mawr campus representative for the Pennsylvania Student Power Network, where she serves as a liaison between the Migrant Rights Coalition and the broader college community, amplifying the impact of activist events.

The Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship is an initiative of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, designed to increase faculty diversity at institutions of higher learning. The program encourages fellows to pursue doctoral degrees and professorial careers.
