Winter Events Connect Scholars, Alumni to Professional Development Opportunities

In January, Posse Atlanta Scholars and alumni participated in three exciting Career Program events: the Winter Career Conference, Deloitte’s “Lunch and Learn,” and a “Job Shadow Day” at Georgia Radio Reading Service.

Fifty Scholars and alumni attended the annual Winter Career Conference, which featured a series of workshops designed to support Scholars’ professional development by incorporating insights from business bestsellers such as They Don’t Teach Corporate in College, The Power of Full Engagement and Strengths Finder. The sessions also included panel discussions with experts in the fields of the arts, humanities and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).

Following the conference, attendees put their networking skills to the test at a dessert reception with representatives from companies such as Alston and Bird, The Coca-Cola Company, Cox Communications, Deloitte, Jones Day, Softtek, Teach for America, Travelers and The Robert W. Woodruff Foundation.

For the second year in a row, Deloitte hosted a “Lunch and Learn” event that offered strategies for getting the most out of college and for successfully transitioning into post-college careers. Deloitte Partner Gairy Moore shared his personal career story and presented several job opportunities at Deloitte for Scholars to consider.

Georgia Radio Reading Service (GaRRS), the state’s only radio program for the blind and visually impaired, hosted Scholars for “Job Shadow Day,” where Scholars were able to see the behind-the-scenes operations of the radio program. Jae Cosby, the executive director of GaRRS, led a tour of the studio while discussing the mission and vision of the station and introducing students to key members of the production staff. Scholar Taylor Walker (BU Posse 4), who interned at the station last summer, spoke to her peers in attendance about her experience at GaRRS.

Posse is incredibly grateful to the generous professionals and companies who donated their time to mentor Atlanta’s Scholars and alumni as they embark on their careers.
