Power of 10 Raises Over $200K, Honors Mayor Menino

Winter 2014 | Boston

On October 15, 2013, Posse Boston’s fifth annual Power of 10 event raised more than $200,000 and featured a special tribute to Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino.

“We are thrilled with the turnout and support for this year’s event,” says Posse Boston Director Lamont Gordon, “especially the strong showing of many proud alumni.”

Four Posse alumni – Beza Ayalew, Ronald Germán, Alwyn McLeod and Sharhea Wade – presented the 2013 Power of 10 Award to Mayor Menino who retired in January after serving as mayor of Boston for 20 years. Since 2006, Mayor Menino has met personally with Posse alumni at an annual breakfast event to discuss opportunities and challenges for young professionals in Boston. Mayor Menino has also hired four alumni to work for his administration.

“We are proud to honor Mayor Menino tonight,” said Beza Ayalew, an alumna of Denison University. “In addition to his commitment to access, diversity and leadership, Mayor Menino has been a longtime champion of The Posse Foundation.”

“Posse is one of the most successful programs we have created for young people in Boston,” said Mayor Menino. “I am proud and honored to have my name mentioned with Posse Boston and the dozens of outstanding young men and women who have gone on, and will continue to go on, to do amazing things at college and after graduating.”

The program also featured remarks by Old Mutual Asset Management President and Chief Executive Officer Peter Bain. He praised Posse for preparing students from diverse backgrounds to take on leadership positions in companies like Old Mutual. Old Mutual has been the lead sponsor of the Power of 10 event in Boston since its inception.
