Mayor, U.S. Attorney Welcome New Posse Scholars

Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh encouraged Scholars to follow their dreams.

Carmen Ortiz, U.S. attorney for the District of Massachusetts, congratulated new Scholars and their families before a crowd of nominators, career partners, Posse alumni and distinguished guests.

On January 9, with the help of Mayor Martin J. Walsh and U.S. Attorney for the District of Massachusetts Carmen Ortiz, Posse Boston welcomed 60 new Scholars during the annual Awards Ceremony. In addition, the ceremony featured remarks by Putnam Senior Vice President and Equity Analyst Lucas Klein, representatives from Posse Boston’s six partner colleges and universities, Posse alumni, Scholars, family members and esteemed guests.

Mayor Walsh and U.S. Attorney Ortiz both lauded the role of Posse Scholars in their communities, and recognized Posse Boston’s role in supporting Greater Boston area public school students.

"There is nothing that Posse Scholars can’t achieve if you put your mind, your heart, and your dedication to it,” said Mayor Walsh. “[Posse is a] good partner with the city of Boston.”

A pre-ceremony reception highlighted Posse Boston’s relationship with Putnam Investments, which has sponsored Posse Boston’s Award ceremony for eight years in addition to hosting Posse interviews and internship celebrations, hiring Posse Scholars for internships and Posse alumni for full-time positions, and much more.

“We are so fortunate to have Putnam as an outstanding corporate partner," says Posse Boston Director Andy Gallagher. "It’s a pleasure to work with the committed team there.”

Abdi Ali, a 2013 Denison University Posse graduate and currently a junior analyst at Brown Brothers Harriman, reflected on his Posse experience. As a child, Abdi and his family fled Somalia due to the civil war. Growing up in refugee camps, he dreamed of going to college.

“It all started with Posse who believed in me way before others got to know who I was,” said Abdi. “Posse saw a young student who was determined to succeed.”
