Posse Boston Welcomes the Class of 2021
On January 5, Posse Boston celebrated 60 extraordinary young leaders as they became Posse Scholars. The annual Awards Ceremony was held at Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel. New Scholars collectively earned over $11 million in full-tuition merit scholarships from six of this nation’s prestigious colleges: Bucknell University, Bryn Mawr College, Centre College, Denison University, Hamilton College, and Union College.
Boston’s Mayor, Martin J. Walsh, joined Posse Boston in welcoming the new Scholars into the Posse community. “It’s an honor to be here with so many great young people from our city,” said Walsh. “You studied with integrity. Your parents and families should be proud of you. You seized this opportunity and created your own opportunities.”
Sponsored for the 10th year in a row by Putnam Investments, the ceremony featured remarks from Kate Lakin, the company’s assistant director of global equity research. “You are a successful, accomplished and impressive group,” said Lakin. “The institutions you will matriculate to this fall are so lucky to have you.”
Posse Boston’s college and university partners also welcomed the new Scholars. Phyllis Breland, the director of opportunity programs and interim director of diversity and inclusion at Hamilton College, exclaimed, “I was so excited that you all are coming that I went out and got new shoes! These are my dancing shoes, and I am extending an invitation. Welcome to Hamily!”
Gianni Hill, Hamilton Posse 17, reciprocated the enthusiasm, chiming in, “Phyllis, I can’t wait to dance with you at Hamilton!”
