Syracuse University (SU) is Posse’s newest partner institution and has signed on to recruit students from three Posse chapters—Atlanta, Los Angeles and Miami—starting this fall.
Syracuse is located in the heart of Central New York and enrolls over 13,000 undergraduate students who represent all 50 states and 124 countries. With more than 200 majors, joint programs in over 40 countries, 15 centers of research and scholarship and 13 schools and colleges—including top-ranked Maxwell School of Public Affairs and the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications—Syracuse is a world-renowned institution with a reputation for excellence.
“The Posse Foundation’s ethos reflects one of Syracuse University’s greatest longstanding strengths, so forging this partnership makes perfect sense,” says SU Chancellor and Provost Nancy Cantor. “Just like Posse Scholars, generations of SU alumni were success stories waiting to happen when SU gave them the opportunity to shine. We are thrilled to partner with Posse, especially in Atlanta, LA and Miami—critical ‘geographies of opportunity’ where SU’s already strong presence is helping us make higher education a reality for increasing numbers of the diverse next generation of leaders that our nation needs.”
As they prepare to become the country’s next generation of leaders, Posse Scholars at Syracuse will have the tremendous opportunity to take advantage of a unique learning environment—one driven by Scholarship in Action, the university’s demonstrated commitment to educate informed and committed citizens, provide access to opportunity, strengthen democratic institutions, create innovation that matters, inform and engage public opinion and cultivate and sustain public intellectuals.
“Posse is extremely proud to welcome Syracuse as a partner institution,” says Posse President and Founder Deborah Bial. “In signing on to recruit Scholars from three Posse chapters, Chancellor Nancy Cantor and her team are demonstrating extraordinary commitment to college access and the success of outstanding young people across the country. We look forward to a thriving partnership that will create life-changing educational experiences for the Scholars.”
Additionally, longtime partner institution Middlebury College has expanded its partnership to annually recruit a second cohort from Posse’s Chicago chapter. Middlebury has recruited Posses from New York since 1998 and is now Posse’s 12th multi-city partner.
“Over the course of our participation in the Posse program—12 years now—one cannot help but notice the positive impact the Posse Scholars have had on our campus,” says Middlebury College President Ron Liebowitz. “Their energy, creativity, leadership and the sharing of their diverse experiences and talents have combined to truly enrich the life of the college.”
“Middlebury has been an exceptional place for Posse Scholars to thrive and succeed,” says Posse President and Founder Deborah Bial. “We are so grateful to President Liebowitz and his dedicated team for extending their commitment to creating the best educational opportunities for more deserving young people. We are especially proud that Dr. Shirley Collado, a Posse Alumna from Vanderbilt, is now dean of the college at Middlebury. We look forward to continuing a fantastic partnership.”
